Adaptive Puzzles for Special Needs: Cognitive and Developmental Disabilities, Rehabilitative, Etc.
Puzzle Art wooden jigsaw puzzles can be custom-tailored for individuals with cognitive disabilities (i.e. mental retardation, Alzheimer's disease, traumatic brain injury, stroke, etc.) and/or developmental disabilities (i.e. autism, Down's syndrome, cerebral palsy, etc.).
For those with either permanent or temporary disabilities, puzzles can bring enjoyment and dignity, not to mention building or maintaining skills. We are proud to offer puzzles that can be made to be age appropriate for adults, teens or children.
Puzzle Art can design a custom puzzle for your special situation. Though this page is primarily concerned with large-piece tray puzzles (also called frame puzzles), I welcome projects calling for any kind of puzzle.

Images for Large size puzzles will be printed as large as possible within the dimensions of 12.75" X 17.5", and Small puzzles are approximately 8" X 10". If you are furnishing a photo or print, your puzzle will be priced as Large or Small depending on which size it is closest to.
If you wish me to use a particular digital photo file, the file size should be 1.5mb or so in .jpg format to permit a high-quality print. If you are unsure as to whether your file size is adequate or it is in another format, you can e-mail the file to me for evaluation before you order. If the file size exceeds 7.5mb, you will have to mail me the file on a CD, DVD, or other media.
Before printing your photo, I almost always will adjust the color or contrast for best appearance and impact.
If the puzzle is to be made from a manufactured print, contact me before ordering to make sure that the finished puzzle can be of appropriate size and piece count.

Besides artwork that you provide, you may use any picture from the Puzzle Art collection of images. Following are several images for which I have obtained permission to use especially for Special Needs puzzles (click to enlarge):
There are many fine photos taken by gifted photographers available on the Internet, often at no charge under various licensing arrangements or by special permission. I can assist with searching for, and obtaining permission to use, a picture that will have special meaning or value to the individual who will be using the puzzle.
Finally, any picture from the Image Gallery (about 100 images) can be used, so long as it can be printed in the Large Size. May I suggest the following (click to enlarge):

Did you know that donations of puzzles to a not-for-profit organization can be tax deductible?
This would include most facilities operated by government agencies or by charitable, religious, educational, and scientific organizations that provide assistance to disabled individuals. Each organization can tell you if gifts will be deductible.
Very often, these organizations have no budget for "recreational" items such as puzzles, despite their obvious benefits, and must rely on donated items.
Be a helper and make a gift of puzzles to your favorite care provider or support organization.
